CLEEN Basis has disclosed that following its findings after the #EndBadGovernance protest in August, 2024, six protesters have been killed by safety personnel in Niger state.
Whereas talking at a media and CSO briefing on Thursday in Minna, the Government Director, CLEEN Basis, Mr. Peter Maduoma mentioned there may be the necessity for complete reforms in Nigeria’s legislation enforcement businesses.
Whereas releasing the findings which confirmed that 23 protesters have been killed by legislation enforcement personnel throughout the August 2024 nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, the CLEEN Basis really useful that there’s the necessity for strengthened accountability, monitoring and reporting mechanisms; common Human Rights coaching; group engagement; Misinformation administration; steady demilitarisation of crowd administration and Rights safety.
Mr. Maduoma who was represented by the Programme Supervisor, Mrs. Chigozorim Okoro, mentioned findings revealed that Legislation enforcement used various levels of drive, from tear gasoline to dwell ammunition, with cases of extreme drive resulting in accidents and dying.
Accordingly, he mentioned “all fatalities have been recorded in northern Nigeria. 13 protesters have been killed on the primary day of the protests, with 10 extra deaths occurring on the third day.
“In Niger state, six individuals have been killed in Suleja and Tafa native authorities areas. 4 individuals have been killed in Kano, 3 individuals have been killed in Kaduna and Borno respectively, 2 individuals every in Katsina and Jigawa whereas one individual every in Bauchi, Gombe and Kebbi state respectively.”
A panel of discussants which had representatives from the Media and CSO highlighted the necessity for civic schooling to make sure that everybody understands the aim of protests and doesn’t use them as cowl for prison actions.
